House History
As with our town, this home is steeped in history. Owner, E.
H. Thomas, whose roots in this town are long established, knows the importance of history and is quick to share his stories to a listening ear. This beautiful Victorian Home became a bed and breakfast in the early 1990s, when Mr. Thomas and his family (a local Mennonite family) acquired it. His passion for history is apparent, as he has so carefully restored this home to its original splendor. The home was originally built in 1909 for the Leaman family by a local builder, Mr. Samuel Futer. True to its beauty, the interior trim is crafted from rich Chestnut wood, which has been preserved in its original condition. Even the stone foundation was built to allow plenty of sunlight to enter the basement. The outside windowsills and lintels are from Indiana Limestone and have been maintained in mint condition. The original windows were composed of large panes of glass, rather than the more frequently used smaller panes. It was recognized in those days, that the large, expensive panes were in the homes of the more well to do families.
Expanding the Inn
Concluding the renovation of the Victorian House, Mr. Thomas began building the three new homestead buildings located behind the house. Keeping with the style of the home, they are reflective of an earlier period and time. Resembling the types of buildings often found near well-to-do homes, the exteriors emulate a barn and livery stables. The suites interiors also embrace the styles of the time. Built and hand-crafted by local Amish carpenters, each of the Homestead suites are lavishly adorned with local woodwork and beamed ceilings.
There's much to learn of our house, it's owners, and our town. So be sure to ask Mr. Thomas about the history of this house and its place in our town.
